Postgraduate Research Scholarship Prize for international applicants (with preference for Students from developing countries) in the field of Astrophysics at Leiden Observatory, Netherlands 2012

Leiden Observatory and the Leids Universiteitfonds, Netherlands have pleasure in inviting applications for the fifth J. Mayo Greenberg Scholarship Prize. Mrs. Naomi Greenberg and family members of the late Professor J. Mayo Greenberg, the distinguished Leiden astrophysicist, have generously provided funds for this scholarship in memory of Professor Greenberg. Additional funding is provided by the Kruytbosch Legacy, the Leids Universiteitfonds and Leiden Observatory.

The purpose of the scholarship prize is to provide an opportunity for a talented graduate student to carry out research and/or receive education at Leiden Observatory in one or more of the fields that were of interest to Professor Greenberg. These include:
* Laboratory astrophysics,
* Dust in the early Universe,
* Dust in the Milky Way and other galaxies
* Comet formation,
* Origin of life.

Eligibility
  • Although applications will be considered from the whole world, preference will be given to applicants resident in developing countries.
  • Candidates should have sufficient educational background in the field to benefit from attendance at graduate courses or participation in the research.
Scholarship Duration
The Scholarship Prize will support a visit to Leiden for a maximum duration of 9 months. In very exceptional circumstances there may be a possibility of extending the visit for a longer period.

Applications for the 2012 Prize should be received before 30 November 2011. These should

  • a curriculum vitae, with details of relevant background
  • a statement containing the purpose for which the grant is requested and
  • a motivation for the request.
Applicants should arrange for 2 - 3 references to be sent under separate cover.

Denmark: PhD Scholarship in Biorefinery at DTU Environment 2012

International PhD Scholarship in the field biotechnology, biochemical engineering, chemistry or microbiology at DTU Environment, Denmark

DTU Environment will offer a PhD scholarship in residual resource engineering with emphasizes on sustainable biomass/residues utilization in a biorefinery concept. The overall aim of the project is to develop an innovative process for biomass/residues processing to biofuels (biogas, bioethanol) and high value added products. The scholarship is open to both Danish and international applicants.

The project is a cooperation project between the Technical University of Denmark, and other external partners from Øresund region. The working place is at DTU, but cooperation with scientists from the partner institutions will take place. Scholarship is available for International students.


Eligibility
  • At the date of appointment candidates must hold an MSc degree in biotechnology, biochemical engineering, chemistry or microbiology.
  • Experience within biofuels (biogas, biodiesel, biohydrogen, bioethanol) production will be an advantage. Research experience should be demonstrated by number of relevant publications in area of biological conversion/treatment of biomass and/or biofuels.
  • The successful candidate must be an efficient team worker, have good communication skills, and have a critical approach to formulation and testing of hypotheses.
  • Practical experience and a wish to work in the lab is a prerequisite.
Selection Criteria
  • Candidates will be evaluated based on their research potential and commitment and selected candidates will be invited for an interview. The scholarship is open to both Danish and international applicants.
  • Candidates may apply prior to obtaining their master's degree, but cannot begin before having received it.
  • All interested candidates irrespective of age, gender, race, disability, religion or ethnic background are encouraged to apply.
  • Practical experience and a wish to work in the lab is a prerequisite.
Scholarship Worth
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years.
The successful candidate will be employed at and enrolled as a PhD student at DTU Environment (www.env.dtu.dk). Annual salary starts at 45,000 EUR before tax, including pension/holiday pay. The starting date is negotiable but a quick start is preferred.

The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited Operator of the NNPC / SHELL/ TEPN / AGIP Joint Venture has shortlisted candidates for the Shell Scholarship Scheme 2011.

Aptitude Test
Shortlisted students are invited for Aptitude Test on Saturday 15th October, 2011.


Venue
Each Student have been designated their test locations in five major parts of the country: Abuja, Lagos, PortHarcourt, Enugu and Warri.
• Abuja: - National Centre for Women Development, Better Life Street, Central Area, Garki, Abuja.
• Enugu: - Command Day Secondary School, Abakpa Military Cantonment, Enugu.
• Lagos: - A.D.R.A.O. International School, 28 Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island, Lagos.
• Port Harcourt: - Command Secondary School, Bori Camp, Port – Harcourt.
• Warri 1: - The Multipurpose Hall, SPDC, Edjeba, Warri.
• Warri 2: - Main Office Restaurant, SPDC., (Opp. Fed. Govt. College), Warri.


ACCREDITATION TIME: 7.30am – 9.45am prompt
APTITUDE TEST TIME: 10.00am prompt.
Shortlisted students are advised to bring their invitation for aptitude test letters, writing materials (including HB pencils and erasers), a recent passport photograph and their university identification card to the exam venue. They are also required to bring the originals and a set of photocopies of ALL of the following:
1. WASC / GCE 'O' Level / SSCE Statement of Result,
2. 'A' Level / NCE / IJMB / Remedial Result (if applicable),
3. Notification of JAMB Result,
4. JAMB or University Admission Letter,
5. Endorsement letters from Community Dev. / Exec. Council Chairman, and Paramount Ruler (if applicable),
