The Higher Education Ministry (KPT) will discuss problems faced by medical students in Australia and Indonesia over not being able to obtain internship.

Its Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said sponsors of scholarship need to ensure all sponsored medical students were offered internship so that they could be called doctors.

“We will talk to the sponsors such as the Public Service Department or Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) and the authorities on how to find a solution to the problem,” he told reporters after launching Phase Two of the Polytechnic Transformation at the Higher Education Ministry, here, Tuesday.

Earlier, Mohamed Khaled was asked to comment on the plight of more than 400 medical students in Australia who could not undergo internship in the country.

He added that the problem of Malaysian medical students cropped up during Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s visit to the Gold Coast, Australia in November.

He said Malaysia also did not offer foreign medical students places for internship at government hospitals due to the lack of vacancies.

“Sponsors of medical student scholarship and the university should discuss to ensure Malaysian students studying in foreign countries obtain places for practical training.

“Like in Ireland, they (sponsors and university) talk and ensure all of them get places,” he said.

Recently a group of Malaysian medical students in Australia sent a petition to the Malaysian government to assist students for internship.

In the petition, it was mentioned that more than 400 students studying for medical degree in Australia had to return to Malaysia for internship as there was insufficient places in that country.

It was also reported last year that there were 200 medical students in Australia who ended up without internship.
