The International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) and TWAS offer fellowships for young scientists from developing countries (other than Pakistan) who wish to pursue research towards a PhD in chemical and biological sciences


The International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) — comprising the H.E.J. Research Institute of Chemistry and the Dr. Panjwani Centre for Molecular and Drug Research, Karachi, Pakistan — and TWAS offer fellowships to young scientists from developing countries (other than Pakistan) who wish to pursue research towards a PhD in chemical and biological sciences.

Eligibility
Applicants for these fellowships must meet the following criteria:
  • be a maximum age of 35 years on 31 December of the year of application;
  • hold a Master's degree in a field of natural sciences;
  • be nationals of a developing country (other than Pakistan);
  • provide a certificate of good health from a qualified medical doctor;
  • provide evidence of proficiency in English.

Programme Details
  • Applicants may be registered for a PhD degree in their home country (SANDWICH option), or may enroll in a PhD course at ICCBS (FULL-TIME option).
  • SANDWICH Fellowships (for those registered for a PhD in their home country): The Fellowship may be granted for a minimum period of 6 months and a maximum period to be decided with ICCBS. Under the sandwich option, TWAS covers only one return journey to the host country.
  • FULL-TIME Fellowships (for those willing to register for a PhD in Pakistan):
  • - The Fellowship is granted for maximum 4 years. If awarded the Fellowship, full-time candidates must sit a compulsory entrance examination in either April or October at the University of Karachi, prior to starting their Fellowship. Upon passing the entry exam, awardees will register at the University of Karachi and ICCBS.
  • ICCBS will provide a monthly stipend which should be used to cover living costs, such as food, accommodation and health insurance. The monthly stipend will not be convertible into foreign currency.
  • If awarded, applicants must sit a compulsory entrance examination in either April or October prior to starting their Fellowship. For the entrance examination, candidates can enter Pakistan on a visitor's visa. Upon successful completion of the entrance examination, candidates will immediately begin their research programme and the necessary requirements for a study visa will be implemented while at the host institution. Local hospitality for candidates travelling to Pakistan for the entrance examination will be provided by ICCBS.
  • The language of instruction is English.
  • Applicants must submit an Acceptance Letter from ICCBS when applying, or by the deadline at the latest. Without preliminary acceptance the application will not be considered for selection
  • Reference letters: Referees must send signed letters as attachments via e-mail directly to TWAS. The subject line must contain: ICCBS/PG/candidate's surname. Alternatively, letters can be sent by post in sealed envelopes. Only signed reference letters can be accepted.
  • Applicants to the TWAS-ICCBS Postgraduate Fellowship Programme should send one copy of their application to TWAS only (by post, fax or email). Please do not send a copy to ICCBS.

Korea University Masters Scholarship for Developing Countries Students 2012/2013

2012 Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and Korea University offer Master's Degree Scholarship Program in International Development for Developing Countries Students

With a mission to nurture talented students from developing countries, KOICA invites high-caliber students from developing countries and helps them gain professional and systematic knowledge that will play a key role in their home country's development. KOICA and Korea University Graduate School of International Studies together provide full tuition coverage for 20 international development program participants. KOICA provides financial support to meet costs of extramural training and to cover allowances and other related expenses.

In particular, this program has significantly strengthened the relationships between Korea and the students' home countries. Students, who have been given an opportunity to see Korea's experience in poverty reduction and socio-economic development, will gain a deeper understanding of Korea and contribute to the future social, political and economic ties between the two nations.

From 1997 to 2009, the program has assisted a total of 771 students through 42 courses. In addition, as of 2010, 220 awardees are currently participating in the program at 10 different universities.
KOICA Scholarship Program is fully committed to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and is determined to expand its efforts to nurture future talents from developing countries to promote their countries' sustainable economic growth and social development.

Duration: February 16, 2012 ~ February 28, 2013 (13 months)

Eligibility
Eligible Applicants are Government officials or researchers working in his/her home country with a Bachelor's Degree or higher, and should:
- Be under the age of 40
- Be nominated by her Government
- Have sufficient command of spoken and written English;
- Be in good health, both physically and mentally, to undergo the course;
- Not have had experience in any of KOICA's training courses within the past three years in the same field.

4. Certificate of Degree (or Certificated Expected Graduation form) of all colleges and graduate schools (in English).
5. Official transcripts of all colleges and graduate schools (should be SEALED by the issuing institution and written in English).

7. Two letters of recommendation (Download Available), from professors familiar with the applicant's academic work, or from professional supervisors.
8. TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS score report : Native speakers of English or those who graduated from the university which all courses are conducted in English are exempt from this requirement.
9. Certificate of Employment (if applicable)

Aalto University offers Masters scholarship for international (Non-EU/EEA) students to study in Finland for 2011/2012

Aalto University provides a wide range of Master's programmes which are taught entirely in English, targeted for all nationalities. For the 2011/2012 intake, the programmes listed below will charge a tuition fee of 8000 EUR/academic year from none—EU/EEA-citizens. To that effect, Aalto University offers a number of full scholarships for non-EU/EEA (international) citizens in these programmes. The scholarships will be allocated in order of merit.

  • non-EU/EEA-citizens who have completed or who will complete Finnish Higher Education degree (university degree or degree from university of applied sciences) by the end of July 2012
  • The applicant must provide certification of being considered equivalent to a European Union Citizen, a photocopy of the residence permit (the residence permit carries the letter P) or a degree certificate from Finnish higher education institution.
Scholarship Worth
The scholarship is allocated for a maximum of two academic years and covers the tuition fee, living and studying expenses.
Category A (Gold): Full Scholarship 16,000 Euro (2x 8,000 Euro per academic year)
Category B (Silver): Full Scholarship 16,000 Euro (2x 8,000 Euro per academic year)
Category C (Bronze): 50% of Full scholarship 8,000 Euro (2x 4,000Euro per academic year)
Aalto University scholarship includes also insurance.
The application for the scholarship is included in the programme specific on-line application form (eAGE). The applicants for master's degree should fill in the on-line application form, available only during the application period 2 January - 15 February 2012.

University of Oslo - Norwegian Quota Scholarship Scheme for Developing Countries 2012

Norwegian Quota Scheme for Developing Countries to study at University of Oslo Norway 2012

The Norwegian Quota Scheme is a funding scheme offered by the Norwegian Government to students from developing countries, Central and Eastern Europe, and Central Asia for studies at institutions of higher education in Norway. Applicants from institutions with which the University of Oslo has a formal cooperation agreement are eligible to apply for the scholarship.

Eligibility
  • Applicants from countries in Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia and developing countries are eligible to apply for Quota funding.
  • Applicants who live in another country than their country of citizenship, either temporarily or permanently, can not apply.
  • Applicants from institutions with which the University of Oslo has a formal cooperation agreement are eligible to apply.
  • Preference is given to applicants who are linked to active and ongoing formalized cooperation/projects within the specific subject area.
Study programmes
Quota applicants may apply for selected Master's degree programmes and PhD programmes. Applicants studying Scandinavian studies in their home countries may also apply for a one-year advanced Norwegian language programme.

Scholarship Worth
Quota funding covers student housing and basic living expenses for one person during the study period. The funding is given as part loan/part grant by the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund. After completing the programme and returning to the student's home country, the loan part is converted to a scholarship. If residence is taken in Norway within ten years after termination of studies, the scholarship is converted back to a loan and must be repaid.

Admission requirements
Formal admission requirements for Master's degree programmes at University of Oslo
As admission is extremely competitive, applicants should have excellent academic records (minimum B+/Upper second/GPA 3.3/4)
Linkage to an institution with a formal cooperation agreement with the University of Oslo. For instance, University of Oslo has cooperation agreements with the University of Jos, Nigeria. Quota applicants from this institution are eligible to apply for PhD - Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. See here for other countries listed. Also contact the International Office at your home university to see if institutional agreements with a Norwegian institution exist.

Tuition Fees
Since the University of Oslo is a state university and therefore publicly funded, the students here do not pay tuition fees. Most students must pay a small semester registration fee of NOK 540 (approx. 68 euro). This fee gives you the benefit of the services of the Foundation for Student Life (SiO). Erasmus, Nordplus, and most bilateral exchange students are exempt from paying the semester registration fee.
