List of Public Universities in Malaysia Posted: 14 Mar 2012 08:07 AM PDT While the University of Malaya is over a century old, the majority of Malaysia's public universities weren't established until the 1970s and afterward.  This is due to the Universities and University Colleges Act of 1971, an executive order that called for sweeping reforms to the public higher education system.  Such changes included more degree offerings as well as interventions for differentiated instructions, which have gone on to become mainstays of modern academic models worldwide. Here's a list of all public universities in Malaysia as well as the year they were founded: National Defence University of Malaysia – 2006 University of Malaysia, Kelantan – 2006 Sultan Zainal Abidin University – 2005 University of Malaysia, Pahang – 2002 University of Malaysia, Perlis – 2001 Tun Hussein Onn University of Malaysia – 2000 Technical University of Malaysia, Melaka – 2000 University of Malaysia, Terengganu – 1999 MARA University of Technology – 1999 Islamic Science University of Malaysia – 1998 Sultan Idris University of Education – 1997 University of Malaysia, Sabah – 1994 University of Malaysia, Sarawak – 1992 Northern University, Malaysia – 1984 International Islamic University of Malaysia – 1983 University of Technology, Malaysia – 1972 Putra University, Malaysia – 1971 National University of Malaysia – 1970 Science University, Malaysia – 1969 University of Malaya – 1905 As you can see, Malaysia's number of public universities has been growing steadily ever since Universities and University Colleges Act of 1971.  With that said, the current global economic outlook and resulting lack of funding for education has caused a freeze in public university development.  Here's to hoping we see yet another Malaysian public university open in the next five years.
