The University of Western Australia invites applications for Australian University International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS) and for Masters and PhD students 2012

Suitably qualified international students are invited to submit applications for scholarships to undertake the degree of Master by Research or Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Western Australia. Application for a scholarship is also an application for admission to the University. The scholarship is open for all area of study offered at the university.

The purpose of the IPRS and the UWA SIRF scheme is to attract top quality international postgraduate students to areas in which the University has specialized research strengths and to support Australia's research effort. Successful applicants can expect to become members of a research team working under the direction of senior researchers and in an area which has attracted external resources.

Eligibility
To be eligible to apply for an IPRS Scholarship for 2012 an applicant—
  • must be eligible to enrol or be enrolled as a full-time student in a higher degree by research at the University upon commencement of their scholarship;
  • must not have commenced a higher degree by research prior to 2012 unless the applicant was unable to apply for a scholarship in the last selection round due to the timing of their enrolment;
  • must have completed at least four years of tertiary education studies at a high level of achievement demonstrated by the award of a degree of First Class Honours standard or equivalent;
  • must be a citizen of an overseas country, excluding New Zealand;
  • must meet the University's English language requirements for scholarship holders;
  • must not have completed a degree either at the same level as, or at a higher level than, the degree for which candidature is sought;
  • must enrol in an area of research concentration and be recommended by the Head of the School in which the proposed study is to be undertaken;
  • must not be an overseas student who is currently on an Australian Government sponsored scholarship such as AusAID seeking to apply for an IPRS immediately following the AusAID-funded study. Such candidates must meet the terms and conditions of these awards prior to applying for future funding. This applies to students under the Australian Sponsored Training Scholarships (ASTAS), the Equity and Merit Scholarship Scheme (EMSS) and the Australian Development Scholarships (ADS).
Selection Criteria
Applications for international postgraduate research scholarships at UWA are rated according to the following criteria:
Academic achievement
English language achievement
Research training achievement
Proposed research environment.
Allocation of scholarships is the outcome of a competitive ranking and selection process in which applications are scored and ranked by Schools, Faculties and the University Scholarships Committee, according to these common criteria and on the basis of evidence provided.

Scholarship Worth
The IPRS scholarship will cover International Tuition Fees for up to four (4) years, as well as Overseas Student Health insurance. Successful applicants may also be awarded a full living allowance scholarship.
The IPRS scholarships do not cover the cost of student union or amenities fees, costs associated with overseas fieldwork, living expenses, bridging English language course or travel expenses associated with the relocation of the student to take up the award.
Scholarships can commence from 1 July 2012.
